Challenge

  • My inexperience making a physical product
  • The lens need to be manufactured in China and shipped to Thailand for assembly with in short period of time
  • Limited budget.

Concept

  • We would like to send VR Glasses as an invitation cards to the guests at the event
  • We want the guests to enjoy the experience of assembly the VR Glasses by themself
  • It has to be lightweight and made from paper

Process and Solution

  • Understand how it works and analyze similar products
  • Did Lo-fi Prototyping, testing, learning, and improving
  • For the VR's body, I needed to find potential partners and local vendors to help build a Hi-fi prototyping
  • Sent the hi-fi prototype to get a green light from the clients
  • Since the VR lens was impossible to manufacture within a given time and there is a local vendor who can help, I've contacted oversea vendors in China.
  • Assembly and distribution to the client

Not only a physical product, I did the fake 3D space for it too.

I also had a chance to collaboration with the our development team to provide in-cinema experience as you can watch our movie from our another product, AIS Movie Store, using this VR-glasses in a virtual-cinema.

The challenge was that we did not yet have capabilities to implement 3D visual space or Metaverse-like back in 2015. So, I came up with an idea to create fake 3D space by using 'Parallax effect' (Difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight)

I used 2D objects (transparent movies seats images) and located them on the 3D space. I used several images to represents a difference depth of space (Near, middle, and Far). As a user move his or her head around, the images are slightly move to the opposite direction according to their distance. The greater distance moves less and slower.

Combined with the darker tone of the cinema environment, I can hide the object and detail that are not meant to be noticed and the result was stunning.

For just this event, we had enabled a way to enjoy Cinema-like experience in AIS Movie Store
